Distance and time from Bilbao Airport to San Sebastián
Bilbao Airport, located in Loiu (about 12 km from Bilbao city centre), is around 100 kilometres from San Sebastián (Donostia). Under normal conditions, the road journey takes between 1 hour and 1 hour 15 minutes. The most direct and fastest route is the AP-8 motorway (Autopista del Cantábrico), which connects Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa almost uninterrupted along the coast.
Compared with public transport, the time difference is significant, mainly due to transfers and waiting:

The route step by step: AP-8 from Bilbao Airport to Donostia
From the Bilbao Airport (BIO) terminal, the usual route is as follows:
- Exit the airport in Loiu and join the A-8 / AP-8 towards San Sebastián.
- Pass the metropolitan area of Bilbao, Galdakao and Durango via the motorway.
- Enter Gipuzkoa through Eibar, Zarautz and Orio, with the coast in view on several stretches.
- Arrive in San Sebastián via the appropriate exit for your destination: centre, Gros, Old Town, Amara or the La Concha beach area.

What about secondary roads?
There is an alternative via national and regional roads (N-634 and similar), more scenic but considerably slower: it can add 30-45 minutes to the journey. It only makes sense if you want to enjoy the coastal scenery and are in no hurry. To catch a flight or reach your accommodation on time, the AP-8 is always the best option.
How long does it really take? Factors that matter
The 1h-1h15 time is the usual journey, but it can vary depending on several factors:
- Time of day: during rush hour (around 8-9am and 6-8pm) access to San Sebastián can slow down.
- Time of year: in August, during the Film Festival (September) or Semana Grande, traffic and city access get congested.
- Your final destination in the city: reaching Amara (city entrance) is not the same as the Old Town or a neighbourhood like Gros.
- The pick-up point: from the terminal it's direct; adding intermediate stops naturally adds time.
- Weather conditions: rain, common on the Cantabrian coast, can reduce average speed.
