It takes place every August for 9 consecutive days, starting with the legendary Txupinazo — the opening rocket fired from the Town Hall balcony — and ending with the closing fireworks spectacular.
In 2025 Aste Nagusia runs August 16 to 24. During those days Bilbao is completely transformed: txosnas (festival tents) line the Arenal riverbank, free concerts fill multiple outdoor stages, the most prestigious fireworks competition in northern Spain lights up the sky nightly, plus parades, children's activities, street performances and a vibrant atmosphere shared by hundreds of thousands of visitors from across Spain and beyond.
