Taxi from Bilbao Airport to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: complete guide

Bilbao Airport (BIO) is the most practical gateway for pilgrims starting the French Way of St James (Camino Francés). From the terminal at Loiu, our private taxi from Bilbao Airport to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port takes you directly to the start of the Camino, with no connections, no ticket queues and no surprises in the price. The journey covers approximately 155 km via the AP-1 motorway to Vitoria-Gasteiz, continuing on the A-15 towards Pamplona and the D933 in France into Saint-Jean — around 1 hour 45 minutes in normal traffic.

Why fly to Bilbao to walk the French Camino?

Many pilgrims flying from outside Spain or Europe ask which is the best airport to reach Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. The answer is usually Bilbao Airport (BIO), and for good reasons:

  • check_circleDirect international connections from London, Dublin, Paris, Berlin, Rome and over 40 European destinations. Ryanair, Vueling, Iberia and easyJet all fly cheap routes into BIO that the small Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne airport (BOD) simply cannot match.
  • check_circleSimilar distance to Biarritz but far more flights. Both airports are around 155–185 km from Saint-Jean by motorway, but BIO has roughly 10 times more route options.
  • check_circleNo connection through Pamplona — public transport forces you onto a bus to Pamplona and then another (very limited) bus to Saint-Jean. A private taxi from BIO takes you door to door.
  • check_circleGreat value for groups — the fixed-price taxi from Bilbao Airport to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is €175 per vehicle. If 3 or 4 pilgrim friends share, that's under €45 per person — cheaper than most public transport combinations.

We leave BIO via the AP-68, join the AP-1 towards Vitoria-Gasteiz and continue on the N-1 / A-15 to Pamplona. From there the N-121-A crosses the Araquil valley and meets the French D933, which runs straight into Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
