Taxi price: Bilbao Airport → Orio

The trip from Bilbao Airport (BIO) to Orio is around 90 km on the AP-8 and the price is fixed per vehicle, not per person: from €140 (up to 4 passengers). Especially good value if 2, 3 or 4 of you travel.
It is a fixed price: you see it before booking and it does not change with traffic, time of day or route. Unlike a metered taxi, there are no surprises even if there is a jam on the motorway. To give you an idea, a €140 trip split between 4 people works out at about €35 per head, less than many public-transport combinations with transfers.

How long does it take and what route?
The taxi runs along the AP-8 towards Donostia and exits at Orio, already very close to San Sebastián: about 90 km from the airport, the longest of the four, but still around 58 minutes of motorway. The town sits on both banks of the Oria estuary, by its mouth.
The usual time is 55 min – 1h 10min, a little more at peak times (Bilbao and San Sebastián rush hours on weekdays) and on busy summer weekends. With flight tracking included, if your plane is early or delayed the driver adjusts the pick-up automatically.
Airport pick-up, step by step
Bilbao Airport (BIO) has a single terminal, so meeting up is simple. Here is what happens when you land:
- We track your flight: we check the real arrival time; it is fine if you are early or late.
- Courtesy wait: we include some minutes after landing to clear passport control and collect your luggage without rushing.
- Meeting in arrivals: the driver waits for you with a sign showing your name.
- Straight off: within a few minutes we join the AP-8 heading to Orio.
Is there direct public transport from the airport to Orio?
No. There is no direct bus or train between Bilbao Airport and Orio. The public-transport route takes at least three steps: (1) take the Bizkaibus A3247 bus from the airport to central Bilbao (about 20-30 min); (2) from the Termibus station, connect to an intercity bus or a Euskotren / Lurraldebus train towards the Gipuzkoa coast; and (3) often, a final transfer or local taxi to Orio. In total, 2h30 or more, with waits, limited timetables and dragging your luggage. The taxi is the only direct door-to-door option.

What to see and do in Orio
Orio, a rowing town 90 km from the airport, is famous for its trainera boats, char-grilled sea bream and for being a stage on the Northern Way. A few highlights:
- A rowing town above all: Orio means rowing: its trainera crew is one of the most decorated on the Cantabrian coast. In summer, the regattas (estropadak) fill the estuary with boats and fans.
- Char-grilled sea bream: the star dish is grilled sea bream, served at the grill houses by the river; for many, the best reason to visit the town.
- The Oria estuary: the estuary is perfect for kayaking, SUP and canoeing; surrounded by green hills, it is a protected, very photogenic setting beside Antilla beach.
- Antilla beach: Orio’s main beach, wide and family-friendly, sits at the mouth of the estuary, a step from the town centre.
- The Northern Way of St James: Orio is a stage on the Northern Way; pilgrims on foot or by bike cross the town towards San Sebastián, making it a regular transfer point with luggage or bikes.
- Old town: the steep streets around the church of San Nicolás de Bari keep the flavour of the old fishing and whaling town.
- Whaling history: Orio was a whaling town; the capture of the last whale in its waters, in 1901, is part of its memory and its coat of arms.

When to visit Orio
Summer is the best time for the rowing atmosphere and regattas, and for the beach and estuary activities. The Northern Way is mostly walked from spring to autumn. If you come for the sea bream, any time is good, but book at weekends. Orio is so close to San Sebastián that it combines easily into one trip.
Where and what to eat in Orio
The star is char-grilled sea bream, served whole at the grill houses on the banks of the Oria, but other grilled fish and farmhouse cooking also shine. All of it with txakoli —the local Katxiña winery is well known— and a good dose of seafaring atmosphere. A meal in Orio is a plan in itself from the airport.
