San Sebastián in August: the star destination of the north
With its mild climate —very pleasant compared with the inland heat—, the iconic La Concha beach, top-level gastronomy and the Semana Grande in the middle of the month, San Sebastián is one of the most sought-after summer destinations in Spain. This also means maximum attendance: full hotels, traffic and saturated public transport.
Arriving comfortably from the airport is the first step to enjoying your holiday stress-free from minute one.
From Bilbao Airport to La Concha, door to door
Bilbao Airport (BIO) is 1h-1h15 from San Sebastián via the AP-8. In August, with beach luggage, children and heat, the advantages of the taxi from Bilbao Airport to San Sebastián stand out even more:
| Option | Price | Time | Door to door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private taxi (fixed price) | From €170 / vehicle | 1h – 1h15 | ✅ Yes |
| PESA bus (Bilbao–Donostia) | ~€17 / person | 1h15 – 1h30 | ❌ No |
| Train (Renfe/Euskotren) | ~€10–25 / person | 2h30+ (with transfer) | ❌ No |
A taxi drops you directly at your apartment or hotel, near La Concha, Gros or the Old Town, without dragging suitcases under the August sun or making transfers via the bus station.
The beaches of San Sebastián waiting for you
To set the scene, these are Donostia's three beaches and their August atmosphere:
- La Concha: the most famous, in the middle of the bay, with calm waters. Perfect for families.
- Ondarreta: a continuation of La Concha towards Monte Igueldo, somewhat quieter.
- La Zurriola: in the Gros district, with waves; the surfers' favourite beach.
Whatever your accommodation area, the taxi drops you as close as possible, which is especially appreciated when loaded with a parasol, coolers and luggage.
Why the taxi is ideal for August holidays
- Summer luggage with no limits: suitcases, parasol, beach gear, pushchair... it all fits.
- Direct to your accommodation: no dragging everything from a station under the sun.
- Fixed price: even with August traffic, you pay the same.
- Ideal for families: the price is per vehicle, so in a group it's great value per person.
- With children: you can request an approved child seat when booking.
The Semana Grande, right in August
If you travel in mid-August, you'll coincide with the Semana Grande (Aste Nagusia) and its International Fireworks Competition over La Concha each night. It's a unique spectacle, but it also means more people and some traffic closures by the bay. The driver knows the alternative routes to take you to your accommodation with the fewest detours.
